Situated close to the Atlantic Oak woods of Ardnamurchan, this house is the sister to Cluain Ghrianach. Intended as ancilliary to the main house, the building draws influence from vernacular outbuildings by using traditional profiled steel and locally sourced timber cladding.
Sustainability and the efficient use of materials were central to the brief. For this reason the house was constructed using a stressed-skin timber superstructure, supported by twelve steel posts that lift the building away from the ground and avoid the need for trench or slab foundations. It is designed to maximize winter solar gain and minimize heat loss with heating provided by a single wood-fired stove. Fuel for the stove is supplied from the same local renewable larch forests as used in the cladding.
